The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is the world's largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory with state-of-the-art high magnetic field facilities and a history in development and application of ultra-high field magnets and instrumentation. The NHMFL is an NSF-funded user facility that operates the world's most powerful electromagnets at Florida State University, the University of Florida and Los Alamos National Lab, including 45 TDC and 35.2T NMR magnets, among others. The DC Field Facility at the Tallahassee site is h ome to 14 magnets and offers researchers the unparalleled combination of the strongest, quietest magnetic fields in the world, coupled with state-of-the-art instrumentation and experimental expertise.

Responsibilities

  • The DC Field Facility at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking a Research Engineer with responsibly for technical contributions to the Electronics Shop's development projects, maintenance work, and operations support. The Electronics Shop is part of the DC Field Facility's multi-disciplinary Instrumentation and Operations team. The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of engineers, scientists, technicians, and control room operators in maintaining, operating and expanding the capabilities of our user facility with the goal to provide the highest and highest quality magnetic fields to the (inter)national user community. In particular, the instrumentation team of our user facility maintains and operates several high-field, world-record resistive, superconducting and hybrid magnet systems, along with four 14-megawatt DC power supplies, an industrial scale cooling water system and cryogenics plant with high reliability and operational uptime. The Electronics Shop is highly involved in the design, maintenance and operation of magnet power supplies, magnet protection systems, custom-electronics circuits and systems for experimental setups, among others.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the assembly, the testing, the installation and contributions to the development of dedicated electronics and circuitry for power systems, equipment control and monitoring, magnet protection systems, and similar. Extensive maintenance and upgrades of existing hardware, troubleshooting of in-house as well as externally developed equipment. Work with project team on the maintenance and operations support of magnet power supplies, magnet protection systems, custom-electronics circuits, and systems for experimental setups. Build specialized instrumentation for laboratory as well as industrial environments. Take part in extensive training for electrical worker qualifications, maintain such qualifications, train in industry safety practices and standards.


Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years' experience or a combination of post high school education and experience.

Candidates should have a background in one of the following: electrical engineering, physics, electrical power technology, or similar disciplines.

Candidates must have significant hands-on technical experience, preferably related to electronics assembly, repair and troubleshooting.

Candidates must work on high power equipment and adhere to industry safety practices and standards.

Preferred

Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree with two years of experience, or a Master's degree. Other combinations of education/experience will also be considered. Experience in electrical circuit design is desired but not required.

Soft Money Funded Position

This is a soft money funded position, with renewal based on available funds and the needs of the University.

If not otherwise specified, schedule is M-F, 8-5.
